RED LIGHTS

RED LIGHTS
( Czerwone swiatla )

If there is anything connecting me to you,
Vladimir from Nachodka and James from Baltimore,
it is the same alarm-clock's ringing
at half to six every morning,
the same eye-lid's scorch
and stiffened legs looking for
slippers. And next the run
along streets, into which a crowd
is being infused like water from an opened
dam, foamed, salivated on lips, splashing
the green, fusty sweat
onto walls of houses. I am running
joining the same crowd, next to you, separated
only by the air layer a few thousand miles dick.
It is nothing,
since each of us is running in the same
direction, seeing in front of us
red lights of a just leaving train. We must run
faster and faster to approach
the rolling wheels which are slowly
diverting off the Earth and covering her and the air
under their wings, raising themselves up,
towards the border of light and sound.
